Miał sześcioro rodzeństwa: starszych - brata Roya, siostrę Margaret Louise i brata Jacka, a także młodszych - siostry Rebę i Joanne oraz brata Tommy'ego.

Zajął 3. miejsce w rankingu magazynu Rolling Stone na 100 najlepszych artystów muzyki country wszech czasów.

Zmarł w szpitalu w Nashville (Tennessee, USA) z powodu powikłań związanych z cukrzycą.

Był członkiem następujących zespołów:
- The Landsberg Barbarians (wokal, gitara);
- The Highwaymen (1985-1995; wokal, gitara).

W 2001 roku otrzymał Medal Kongresu USA (Congressional Medal of Arts) za szczególny wkład w rozwój sztuki.
