The original film had a really interesting
story. A bunch of [American] soldiers who are prisoners are on their way to a court martial. Their convoy is attacked by a German plane, so now they are in war-torn France. They can’t go to the Americans because they’d be in jail for the
rest of their lives, and they can’t go to the Germans, so they are trying to get to Switzerland. Now that’s a really good story. When I bought it, I didn’t know how much was going to be a remake. But at the least, I could use the title. (..) When I bought the title of Enzo Castellari’s Inglorious Bastards [1978], which has a good story line, I thought I might take something from his story line, but it just never worked out. I was going to follow the original [Castellari] story about American troops escaping while being convoyed to court martial and execution.
