As Helen learns that the man who raped her twenty-five years ago wants to repent now that he’s dying from cancer, Joan is unable to accept Adam’s apology for cheating on her. After acting on a suggestion from God that she take up an old knitting project, Joan has little sympathy when Adam comes looking for comfort after he loses his job. Meanwhile, as Luke chastises Friedman for using marijuana, Helen goes to the hospice to see the dying Edmond Dodds. Yet, even though Edmond claims to have found comfort in God, Helen still can’t bring herself to forgive him. Though she’s angry at his attempt to restore their friendship, Joan worries when Grace tells her that Adam has disappeared after going on a hike alone. At the trailhead where his truck has been found, a park ranger tells Will, Joan, Grace, and his dad, Carl Rove, that darkness and bad weather have made it impossible to start a search until morning. As they wait for some news, Grace says that Joan’s secrecy was partly responsible for how things have ended up with Adam. Meanwhile, after Luke agrees to experiment with marijuana, his drug-induced paranoia makes it impossible for him to talk to Grace when she tries calling to tell him about Adam. God asks her to look for parallels between knitting and her life, Joan sees Adam and hiker Ryan Hunter stumbling into the ranger station. As Adam is reunited with his dad, Joan discovers that God sent Ryan to rescue him. And as she and Adam decide to continue looking for some common ground, Joan is left wondering about Ryan’s connection with God. Finally, while Luke finds little sympathy when he tells Grace how being stoned made it impossible for him to answer her phone call, Helen takes Will with her to the hospice, only to discover that Edmond has already died.

Already stressed out by her upcoming physics final, Joan is left looking for the meaning in visits by her dead friends, Judith and Rocky. Claiming to have seen Judith, too, Helen turns to Lilly, who suggests that it may be a divine gift. While Will is surprised when Ryan Hunter, the stranger who rescued Adam, shows up at his office as the president of the Citizen’s Watchdog Committee, and Joan wonders what God meant by telling her that she is about to be tested, Helen’s nightmare about vandalism at the local Catholic church comes true. Will opens an investigation and Kevin covers the attack for the newspaper, Lilly tells Helen that the vandalism has left her questioning her decision to leave the church. Already suspicious of Ryan’s sudden presence, after learning that, as the new owner of the newspaper, he’s offered Adam an internship, Joan wonders about any connection between their respective talks with God. Then, as Helen questions how serious Will is taking his investigation, and Lilly tells Kevin that she’s considering a return to the church. When Ryan shows up at the bookstore, their discussion leaves Joan feeling that his relationship with God may have a nefarious purpose. Following another dream, this one about Grace, Helen learns of an arson fire at her dad’s synagogue. As rumors spread that the church attacks are the work of a satanic cult, Joan is increasingly concerned with Ryan’s sudden appearance in her life, but can’t get her dad to listen. So, when Ryan’s getting a seat on the school board allows him to finally worm his way into the lives of nearly everyone she’s close to, Joan learns that the test she’s being prepared for is no less than a battle between good and evil
