This was one of the last significant roles of Madsen, where he completely dedicated himself to the role - going to Ireland, losing weight, working hard on the training in order to do it, doing the fight scenes, making life choices that would be good for the movie and the character. He was just really into it. And you can see it - it's right there in the film. It's a serious movie. (..) This is a movie where Michael doesn't do his Michael things. He keeps it all interior, behind the eyes. And it works so good in this, it almost gets me mad that he didn't do this a little bit more, because he spent all these years trying to be like Robert Mitchum - and in this movie, he's like Robert Mitchum, because he's not trying to be Robert Mitchum anymore. He's just Michael. And he's a character - not trying to win the scene, not trying to be cool. He's terrific.
