Dziennikarz sportowy, głównie baseballowy. W 1984 roku zaczął pisać do magazynu "Post".
W 1969 roku ukończył Amherst College (Massachusetts, USA).
Autor wielu książek, m.in. "How Life Imitates the World Series" (1982), "Strokes of Genius" (1987), "The Heart of the Order" (1989), "Cracking the Show" (1994) oraz "Diamond Dreams" (z Walterem Ioossem) (1996).
