Charles tries to convince Jamie that college is fun and she should take the college preparatory courses offered in high school. Then he becomes upset when Buddy tells him that the paper he wrote on General Custer must be presented orally in class or they will receive a failing grade. Lillian explains to Buddy that when Charles was twelve he was giving a speech in class and his voice cracked. The children laughed and ridiculed him and since that time, Charles is unable to speak in front of an audience.
