Skład zespołu wielokrotnie ulegał zmianie. Zespół założyli Robert Fripp (gitara, instrumenty klawiszowe), Greg Lake (śpiew, gitara basowa), Michael Giles (perkusja, śpiew), Ian McDonald (saksofon, flet, instrumenty klawiszowe, śpiew) oraz Peter Sinfield (słowa, iluminacja).

Zespół powstał w 1968 roku w Londynie (Anglia, Wielka Brytania).
