The Once Upon A Time(line) Theory
UPDATE (06/23/2015): I tweeted this to Adam Horowitz and he replied that it seemed “VERY accurate” at first glance. So thank you, Adam! (Picture at the end of the post!)
For years, fans of “Once Upon A Time” have been trying to figure out that tricky little present day timeline. Adam Horowitz and Eddie Kitsis have roughly estimated us to be in early 2013 by season 4′s first half, and in-show evidence weakly hints that while only six weeks have passed between the two halves of season 4, mid 2013 in 4B is now early 2014 (the only evidence for that being a missing poster for the Blue Fairy dating her last known sighting as November 2013, which being only one piece of evidence and something that was meant to be background dressing and not an actual focal point, will be counted as inaccurate). Below the jump is a fairly accurate review of the timeline.
Emma’s 28th birthday is October 23rd, 2011, confirmed by Adam. This is also the date of the series’ premiere (EP1-01).
It’s widely believed that Price Of Gold (EP-4) is in the first few days of November (it also originally aired mid-November). This episode is important later on.
We know that Skin Deep (EP1-12) not only premiered on Valentine’s Day, it’s also Valentine’s Day in Storybrooke itself. So that’s February 14th, 2012.
The very next episode, What Happened To Frederick (EP1-13) takes place on the 19th of February, 2012, being the date that Kathryn Nolan disappears. Dreamy (EP1-14) takes place the next day, 02/20/2012.
The 24th is when Kathryn is found, the same day Regina reveals to Mary Margaret that she framed her. This is because The Stable Boy (EP1-18) and the previous three episodes all happen on a daily basis after Dreamy.
Due to the remaining episodes of the season happening back-to-back, the season finale, A Land Without Magic (EP1-22), appears to happen on 8:15am on February 28th, 2012.
Season 1: 10/23/2011 - 02/28/2012
Season 2 begins with Broken (EP2-01) on the same date. By night time, Emma and Snow are in the EF with the Wraith and are discovered the next day, February 29th. Fun fact for Wonderland fans: It’s confirmed that Wonderland starts during the middle of the Wraith’s attack, so February 28th, 2012.
Snow and Emma are in the Enchanted Forest for about 2 weeks. The first 9 episodes of the season all happen back to back as the search for Snow and Emma is urgent, and each episode roughly features two days during its events. This places their return around March 14th.
Snow is stated to have been born in “the harshest winter”. This could mean that the winter she was born in, and the fact that her mother hailed from a Northern kingdom, she was born later in the year than the traditional end of Winter. (Traditionally Spring begins in March, on the 19th, 20th or 21st, depending on the year.)
In 2012, Winter ended on the 20th of March, and seeing as how from The Cricket Game (EP2-10) to The Queen Is Dead (EP2-15) is a continuous timeline, The Queen Is Dead would seemingly take place on March 20th, giving us Snow’s birthday.
About two weeks after Tiny (EP2-13), which probably took place on the 18th, is when the season 3 Finale happens. Giving us a timeframe of around April 1st, 2012.
Season 2: 02/28/2012 - 04/01/2012
In Dark Hollow (EP3-07) it’s been five days since the season started, so April 6th, 2012.
In Going Home (EP3-11) it’s been four days since Dark Hollow, as the cast was in Neverland for a week, and have only been back two days. April 10th, 2012.
Season 3A: 04/01/2012 - 04/10/2012
Snow casts the second Dark Curse roughly a year later. For all intents and purposes, I’ll make this an exact year. April 10th, 2013, which is when Hook shows up at Emma’s door.
By the end of New York City Serenade (EP3-12), fittingly enough, we should be around the 12th of April, 2013.
Emma confirms she regained her memories a week prior in Quiet Minds (EP3-15), so this is the 19th.
A Curious Thing (EP3-19) happens a few days later, so around the 21st/22nd. I’ll go with the 22nd.
Snow immediately goes into labor, meaning Neal is born in Kansas (EP3-20) on the 22nd. Rumple kills Zelena the same day, and she activates the Time Portal overnight. Season Finale happens the next day, the 23rd.
Season 3B: 04/10/2013 - 04/23/2013
Now since season 4A picks up where 3B left off, it’s the same date. April 23rd.
Remember how I said waaaaay back when that Price Of Gold was going to be important later on? Yeah, it’s time. In The Snow Queen (EP4-07), Cinderella’s baby, Alexandra, is featured in this episode. Due to an error, the baby featured was a newborn boy. Adam Horowitz confirmed on Twitter, that Alexandra should be 18 months.
This fits pretty well in with the timeline, seeing as Alexandra would be 18 months old around the first week of May. Elsa and Ingrid’s storyline seems to resolve itself in a week, two weeks tops. So let’s guesstimate at Elsa, Anna, Kristoff and Rumple all leaving Storybrooke on May 7th, 2013 (May 7th is also the date I first started writing my novel way back in 2007. I’ll be lucky if I finish it by 2070. :P)
Season 4A: 04/23/2013 - 05/07/2013
Season 4B is six weeks later. Taking this as exactly six weeks as we did with the one year jump, this gives us a date of June 18th, 2013. Ironically, the same day that Frozen released its first trailer. Even more ironic? It features Olaf, the only Frozen character to not have even a passing cameo on the show.
And so far, it seems like once again the timeline is highly compressed and happening back-to-back. So let’s give these 11 episodes… two more weeks. This brings us to July 2nd, 2013.
Season 4B: 06/18/2013 - 07/02/2013
A. Horowitz przejrzał ją i sam przyznał, że jest bardzo dokładna:
