Ma siostrę Lynn.

Ukończył studia licencjackie na Goddard College w Plainfield (Vermont, USA).

W 1984 roku otrzymał Nagrodę Pulitzera za dramat "Glengarry Glen Ross".

Jego dziadkowie ze strony ojca byli polskimi Żydami.

Jest jednym z założycieli teatru Atlantic Theater Company na Manhattanie (Nowy Jork, USA).

Napisał scenariusz do filmu "Malcolm X", który został odrzucony przez reżysera Spike'a Lee. Ostatecznie film powstał w oparciu o tekst Lee i Arnolda Perla.
