Zespół powstał w USA w 2001 roku.

Skład zespołu to Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (gitara, syntezatory), Cedric Bixler-Zavala - (śpiew), Isaiah "Ikey" Owens (instrumenty klawiszowe), Juan Alderete (gitara basowa) , Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez (instrumenty perkusyjne, syntezatory), Paul Hinojos (gitara)
oraz Thomas Pridgen (perkusja).

Zespół wydał następujące albumy:
- 2003 r. - "De-Loused in the Comatorium";
- 2005 r. - "Frances the Mute", "Scab Dates";
- 2006 r. - "Amputechture";
- 2008 r. - "The Bedlam in Goliath";
- 2009 r. - "Octahedron";
- 2012 r. - "Noctourniquet".

Zespół założyło dwóch muzyków zespołu At the Drive-In - Cedric Bixler i Omar Rodriguez (początkowo pod nazwą De Facto).
