As Professor X and Emma Frost battle for psychic control of Jean, the Inner Circle members quarrel over how to dispose of their prisoners, the X-Men. When Mastermind tries to force Phoenix to kill Cyclops, she finally breaks free of the psychic controls on her, leaving the X-Men to fight for themselves. When Mastermind finds her on the roof, Phoenix reveals that he foolishly unleashed her dark side, and she allows him to see the universe through her eyes -- the eyes of a god. Mastermind's mind collapses and Phoenix unleashes her powers on New York City, declaring that the Dark Phoenix has been born
