My name is Stanislav Zworski. I am Russian citizen of Polish origin. I am deeply affected by the incredible film of true genius Wojciech Has and what's a pity it's in grayscale!
But nevermind, there is one GNU-distributed script for Mathlab made by Israeli team. It makes the colorization process an easy efficient and cheap thing it never was before. Here are some results of it's work:

So, let us start thinking about an amateur SARAGOSSA COLORIZATION PROJECT. My calculations said it would take a year for a team of 20 painters and about 6 000 000 roubles if made in Russia at studio, for example. But it can perfectly be a net-project with the little help of each person in great workgroup, enlisted from all over the world.
Moreover, there are some artists and illustrators in Russia, who could IMAGINE what the colors it could be. For example, look at

So, it would be great if somebody who knows Polish well (me not, alas) could convince the authors of the fan-site to cooperate on this subject.

Rozumiem, ale nie jestem na tyle dobra, żeby odpowiedzieć po angielsku. Ale myślę, że mnie zrozumiesz. Uważam, że projekt zrobienia z tego czarno białego filmu filmu kolorowego nie ma szans. Były już u nas takie przeróbki; np. z filmem "Jak rozpętałem II Wojnę Światową". Sama mam też wersję kolorową. Ale "Rękopis znaleziony w Saragossie" to całkiem inny film. Wątpię, żeby jego wielbiciele chcieli oglądać wersję kolorową. W tym filmie obraz ma całkiem inne znaczenie. Trudno to wytłumaczyć. Ale; jeśli naprawdę chcesz kogoś do tego zainteresować, to żle trafiłeś. Bo po pierwsze; wielbicieli tego filmu nie jest dużo, przeważają zwolennicy "Samych swoich", albo nawet "Plebanii". Po drugie na takie cóś potrzeba by co najmniej kilkadziesiąt tysięcy dolarów. Czyli; zwróć się raczej ... no właśnie; do kogo? Nikogo takiego w Polsce nie znajdziesz. Gdyby to był film powiedzmy o Papieżu, albo o tych co potrzebują legendy bojowników obalających komunę, to co innego. A tak, to daj sobie spokój. My zajęci jesteśmy kolorowaniem przeszłości z lat 1970 - 2000.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I don't think colorization of the movie is a good idea. The Saragossa Manuscript is a cultic film deeply rooted in fans' hearts so at least, for that reson, your idea is controversial; it would be like painting The Eiffel Tower in rainbow colours. I am sure most people would object since this is an icon and doing that you would rape the sacred memories and associations of many dedicated lovers of the movie.
Becides, don't you think that colourization might spoil the misterious atmosphere of the masterpiece as well as the intentions of the author? The film was shot in late 1960s so had it been the need of Has it would be colourful. I am sure this was a conscious decision of the director.
If you still have doubts write to F.F. Coppola and M. Scorsese the great lovers of the movie who did the refurbishment of the copy. They left it as black and white, do you think they missed something...?
