when I saw Hunt October I was like: okay, yeah, boom, there's a new guy in town. it's for sure the new epic filmmaker of the generation is going to be John McTiernan.. there's only so many directors that when they close their eyes to make the movie in their mind, that have a natural proficiency for epics film making. they just can't help it. the movies that they see in their heads are epics. so there's horses and there's tons of extras and there's moving cameras and there's a giant production design and it's all orchestrated. the rest of us mortals have to build it up a piece at a time to get those effects. so obviously David Lean is somebody like that, and so is Spielberg, but I think the number one director that you think about in terms of that would probably be Otto Preminger. and John McTiernan. he's a combination of Tony Scott and Otto Preminger. you know it's got the look, the size, the hip of Tony Scott imagery, lighting and everything, but it doesn't have the attention disorder editing style. he's thinking classically.
