I know a lot of people were very upset about poison and wine being used in this scene. and at first i was too. because that song means so much to me and i picture it coinciding with an epic delena scene. and this scene at first glance is just a phone call in which elena calls stefan first. but then like the obsessive shipper i am i re-watched this scene multiple times and have found the beauty in it. hear me out on what i am about to say. it may sound a little out there, but to me it makes perfect sense.
it looks like elena hasn’t slept much, if at all. she checks her phone almost immediately. she hasn’t heard from damon. she called him multiple times last night and he hasn’t even sent her a text back. so she calls his brother for a few reasons. she needs to talk to stefan about esther’s plan again. she is having doubts about going through with it. also i think she wants to check up on damon. but stefan doesn’t answer. and the lyrics playing when stefan ignores the call are “oh you think your dreams are the same as mine.” i don’t know if that was coincidence or not, but in my mind those lyrics were sung at that part of the scene for a reason. when you are with your first real love (i say it like that because i dont know what matt and elena’s relationship was like) you are mesmerized. you can get caught up in what should be and forget about what actually is there. you may think that you share the same dreams and aspirations, but usually you find out through growth and time that you do not. i am not denying stelena’s love i am just saying that things aren’t the same as they were before clearly and feelings have changed in some shape or form. they thought that they would be together forever. they thought their dreams were the same and in reality that is not the way things have panned out.
Then elena calls damon. she sucks up her pride and she calls him one more time hoping that he will pick up. and damon picks up as the lyrics “i always will” play in the background. because damon will always love elena no matter what happens. no matter how much pain is caused he will never abandon his love for her. damon answers the phone with an annoyed “what?” but he still answered. he didn’t need to answer, but he did because he knows that elena needs him and he can’t turn his back on her.
Elena responds with, “hey, i called you ten times last night. We need to talk” the lyrics that play in the background cripple me because they go perfectly with the whole situation that occurred the night before. The words “I wish you’d hold me when I turn my back” play in the background. Elena turned her back on Damon. She completely shut him out when she needed him the most.
Although this line doesn’t play in this scene the next sentence in the song is “The less I give the more I get back.” And Damon responds to Elena by saying, “sorry I’ve been busy.” He has been ignoring her and she is actually playing the ball that has been in her court for a long time now. He gave less and she gave more back.
Elena responds with, “If you’re mad at me Damon you need to get over it.” No words from the song play, but Elena really doesn’t know what to do. She hurt Damon so much and she doesn’t have the strength yet to say the words that would take away all of the pain that she has caused Damon.
Before hanging up Damon harshly says “Oh I’m over it.” He is not over it. He will never be over Elena. The best part of this scene is that as Damon says this and is pretending not to care but you can see on his face that he is lying. And the song continues with the words “Oh I don’t love you but I always will. I always will.” I don’t even think I need to comment on that because it speaks for itself.
(i’m dedicating this to Joanna because I first heard this song on her blog. she is a great friend of mine and a huge delena shipper. and like all of us de shippers she was expecting an “epic” scene to go along with this song. well it was epic. in every way that delena is epic. because their love has never been one where you need the exact words “i love you.” it is written all over their faces and you can her love the adoration and love in their voices.)"
