Stefan, Elena, and Damon were M.I.A., but there was still plenty of juicy Vampire Diaries dish to be had during the CW drama's panel at the Austin Television Festival over the weekend. Executive producer Julie Plec and Arielle Kebbel, who plays Stefan's dead but not quite gone BFF Lexi, hit the stage to give fans the scoop on listening to fans on Twitter, the toughest character deaths, and what's on tap for Season 5. Keep reading for all the highlights from the ATX Vampire Diaries panel!

On revealing Damon and Lexi's full backstory:
Both Plec and Kebbel loved diving into Damon and Lexi's complicated history this season with the episode "Because the Night", which gave a whole new level of meaning to Damon's decision to kill Lexi during the Season 1 episode, "162 Candles."

"We didn't know with Lexi and Damon that that was their backstory when we did '162 Candles,' but we did know that they had a history," Plec revealed. "They felt like they had a history that was untold. So it was fun for us to be able to circle all the way back around to be able to tell that."
Kebbel added: "No wonder Lexi and Damon hate each other, because it all comes from love. And even someone as strong and courageous as Lexi, who is such a Mother Teresa figure sometimes, she still makes mistakes... It's one of my favorite episodes because I feel like Lexi got to be human. It deepens the relationship and the history."

On making death mean something in a show with ghosts and immortals:
Plec acknowledged that making character deaths feel relevant and substantial can sometimes be tricky on a show where characters have been known to come back from the Other Side. "We believe that death needs to have real stakes," the EP told the crowd. "But it wasn't until we created the ghost story and the idea of the Other Side that we started getting more of a glimpse of the people we had loved... And we debated a lot, and I go back and forth as a storyteller wanting to avoid breaking down the stakes of the story. If anyone can come back at any time, then you're really diminishing the power and the stakes.

"But on the flip side of that, losing a beloved character on a TV show, you feel a grief. There's a really powerful grief that comes attached to that. And sometimes I think we make the decision that it's okay to sort of break a rule and diminish the stakes after the fact because the joy of seeing this person is equally as powerful as having lost them."

On the toughest character death to write:
Plec revealed that there were actually three deaths that were exceptionally hard for her. The first was the Season 1 death of Vicki Donovan, played by Kayla Ewell, because the actress was so beloved by the rest of the cast and because Vicki was the first major character to die. Plec also had a very hard time telling Sara Canning that Aunt Jenna would be meeting her maker at the hands of Klaus. But the hardest death for Plec was definitely Alaric Saltzman's.

"As a fan and as a friend, without a doubt Matt Davis as Alaric Saltzman. That character is still my favorite," Plec shared. "It felt like a very powerful loss both for the show and the story, knowing that Damon wouldn't have his buddy and that Elena and Jeremy wouldn't have their guardian."

On running a show in the age of Twitter:
Plec acknowledged that the Vampire Diaries writers and producers sometimes feel like they get hammered by fans on Twitter, either for killing off a character or for furthering a particular romance.

"I'll be honest, it's very difficult as a writer who is actively engaged in social media to gauge [Twitter reactions]. On the positive, it's a little like a built-in focus group...on the other hand, it's a very microcosmic audience. The vocal opinions you are getting are sort of the extreme dissenters or the extreme passion," Plec explained. "And I realized that somewhere in the midst of the highs and the lows exists everybody else… It's like with five percent on one end and five percent on the other end, you want to obviously tell the story you want to tell, first and foremost, and make sure the 90 percent in the middle don't get their experience compromised by the louder voices."

On what's coming up in Season 5:
Just like fans, Plec is very excited to see what Season 5 brings for everyone's favorite Mystic Falls vamps. "[There's] college, Paul Wesley playing two characters, a human Katherine... My god, like how great. Like the first time she catches a cold, how friggin' pissed is she going to be?" the EP laughed. "You know, a new relationship with Damon and Elena trying to make it work and a villain in their midst that they don't know is a villain in the beginning. And Jeremy having to go back to school! Like what the hell cover story is that going to be? They had a memorial service for the kid, there were flyers!"

The gang's journey to Whitmore College, which is located about 30-45 minutes away from Mystic Falls, will also bring a whole new set of adventures. "I think that there's going to be some great new characters and a great new world with the college thing. And some great romance and a pretty cool mythology in terms of Silas and the mystery of his past."

But don't expect the characters to attend any more college classes than they did high school classes. "Class is boring television," Plec joked.

Arielle knew from the beginning Damon would kill her.
She auditioned for Elena and was really excited to be called back… and then ended up as Lexi.
“Kevin Williamson was so excited about killing me.” – =Arielle.
Arielle on Damon and Lexi: “No relationship is that simple. He left me to sizzle – He’s a dick!”
The passion of the fans kept producers bringing Lexi back again and again.
Julie: What death hit her the hardest? Kayla (Vicki) was “devastated,” Sarah Canning (Jenna) started crying Sarah said: “Two years I’ve been waiting for a good storyline, and you’re killing me?” ”As a fan and as a friend … killing Matt Davis was devastating.” – Julie.
Julie;”We debated a lot about bringing people back from the dead.”
Julie was surprised how many Damon and Elena fans emerged at the show’s start.
On Season 5: “We were just talking about the first time Katherine gets a cold. She’s going to be pissed!”- Julie.
Julie on next season: “How is Jeremy going to go back to school?! There was a memorial service. There were flyers!”
On the love of #TVD fans for Damon and Elena kissing in the rain. “Yeah, for sure, anything is possible.” – Julie.
Julie on dumping Stefan in a lake “We were trying to figure out the best way to bury him and where.”
On the criticism Stefan’s burial was too Whedonesque like on ‘Angel’; ‘It’s okay if it is different enough.” – Julie.
Julie said the most emotional experience of writing a scene was Anna and Pearl and Anna saying goodbye to Jeremy.
Julie on the Anna scene – “The show is about the fear of being loved.. that drove everything from there on out.”
Julie on TVD: “This show is about fear of being alone. It took me 50 episodes to realize it. I was like, I think I need to go back to therapy.”

Julie said Klaroline’s journey is “far from over” – “there’s something so magical about them.”
“I will never be a Delena fan — I mean, come on! Stelena all the way.z’ – Arielle.

Julie;”I always look at Caroline and Stefan that she’s his new Lexi… they are so charming together.”
“The other side looks just like this world, but Alaric is sitting there and Lexi is sitting there…but he can’t see her and she can’t see him. You’re still in the world, but you’re alone…” – Julie.
Arielle: “There are ways to show the other side in a really cool way but that’s all I can say for now.”
Julie: “The challenge with ‘The Originals’ is to launch a new series that feels like a new series… with that said, Klaus has a girl and Rebekah just came off a world tour with [Matt]. They both have a history.”
Julie Plec: “I would like to see any of these characters turn up in New Orleans.”
“Hayley has her own storyline and isn’t a threat to Klaus’s love life.” – Julie.
If the writers can figure out how to bring TVD characters into world of ‘The Originals’ Julie says there are “endless possibilities.”

A fan asked a question about Silas! Paul says “Yes, I’m drowning.”
Paul said he told Torrey 6 months ago about Silas and she forgot it the next day! He likes Stefan’s dark side!!!
Question: What was the best moment in Germany?- Paul said when he woke up and Torrey was next to him! Awe…
Torrey’s favorite moment was when everyone sang happy birthday to her yesterday.
Paul was in Poland two weeks ago just to see his grandparents. He said he’s really close to them.
A fan wrote a song for them and Paul told her that she should be a writer.
A fan: “My question is for Torrey.” Paul: “I’ll be sure to answer it.” Lol!
Torrey says we all see Paul as Stefan the sweet guy but when she goes home he’s like Silas.
Question: Who’s the funniest on the ‘Vampire Diaries’? Paul: “Me!”
Paul says Torrey is literally the only person that doesn’t think he’s hilarious.
He finally says that Daniel is hilarious, He cant even look at Daniel when they’re shooting and he said he’s the best.

No akurat na studiach to bym się zdziwiła gdyby nagle zaczęli chodzić :D Ciekawe ile by im jako wampirom obdarzonym super umiejętnościami zajęło przebiegnięcie tego dystansu z MF do Whitmore....chociaż lepiej z tych umiejętności przecież nie korzystać. Życie by było za proste.

W 4x21 byly sceny jak z horroru z uciekającą blondi, a w 4x22 kazal jej się ciąc :D Ale i tak Epic couple - w sumie Klaus zaczynał podobnie - chcial zlozyc Caro i Tylera w rytuale w 2 sezonie. :D A skoro Klausa nie ma to trzeba inny - równie ekscytujący ship jej podarowac ;D

Potem zrezygnowali z tego....z resztą na początku 1 sezonu przedstawili Damona na znacznie silniejszego i z większą iloscią supermocy - panowal nad pogodą, potrafil na odleglosc kontrolowac Caroline etc. Potem oslabiali go coraz bardziej i bardziej. Ile to się musial Stefan namordowac w 1 sezonie by Damona okielznac. A w 3 czy 4 z latwoscią juz mu skręca kark i tym podobne.......

Ale sami nie potrafią chyba wyjaśnić jakim cudem mógł kontrolować pogodę, zwierzęta (tego kruka właśnie) czy Caroline na odległość? Czy może to było wyjaśnione w książce? Nie czytałam, bo uznałam, że tam są jeszcze grosze głupoty, no błagam.. anioł Elena.. xd

Nie wyjasnili i nie wyjasnia. Zmienili mitologię i osłabili zwykle wampiry - by nie bylo "zbyt łatwo" głównym bohaterom. Chyba zauwazylas trend - ze na początku czarny charakter wydaje się superpotęzny - by po kilku sezonach i kolejnych villanach byc zaprezentowany jako slabiak....

Damon w 1 sezonie to byl boss - teraz kazdy wampir moze go zlac na kwasne jakblko
Kathernie byla diablem wcielonym, ze musieli ukladac misterne plany by ja pokonac - w tym sezonie o maly wlos Elenka - kilkumiesięczny wampir by ją zabil prawie jedną reką w 4x22....

Z Katherine najlepiej było jak Damon ze Stefem jej nie mogli okiełznać... Jeny jaki to był świetny odcinek. :)
